In her book, Composing a Life, Mary Catherine Bateson notes that “fluidity and discontinuity are central to the reality which we live.”Life’s upsets, apparent detours, difficult decisions all combined to yield an emergent pattern. “The whole fabric of a person’s life interacts with his or her total environment, and something new emerges” 1 .
