ABSTRACT
In Chapter 1 it was said that signal detection theory could be used both as the basis for a general theory of behaviour and for devising methods for measuring performance in experimental tasks. For the time being we will concern ourselves with this latter use and proceed to describing the basic types of detection task. There are three main types of experimental situation in which detection data can be collected; the yes-no task, the rating scale task and the forced-choice task.
