ABSTRACT
Many commercial phonics programs devote some space to teaching children about r-controlled vowels. In words that exhibit this phenomenon, the pronunciation of a vowel letter is altered by a neighboring letter r. Thus, we find distinct pronunciations of the vowel letters in bad and bard, and in sit and sir.
