ABSTRACT
From its beginning in 1986, the research reported here took place at a stateoperated psychiatric hospital using clinical records generated in the ordinary course of admitting and treating patients. The research was initiated primarily for the purpose of improving patient diagnostic formulation and care. At the outset, plans included developing local norms that might better identify conditions and treatment needs.
