ABSTRACT

Independent reading is the daily practice of teachers and students reading silently and autonomously for 10-30 minutes, from material of their own choosing.

Samantha slips into the hall and hangs a sign on the door handle of the kindergarten room-“Please Do Not Disturb, Reading in Progress.” Several children playing near the door put their blocks away and head for the library corner to select their books. Mrs. Jamison rings a small bell three times, and the rest of the children move to the book area to find something to read.
