ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a model for evaluating the language skills of African American students. The Michigan Protocol for African American Language (MPAL) has been developed from the work of our research program over the last decade and represents the reevaluation of time-tested traditional approaches for their appropriateness with African American students. This chapter begins with a brief background orientation to the issues involved in developing culture-fair evaluations for African American students, and then presents the MPAL model.
