ABSTRACT

Along with studying children’s knowledge and thinking, we have developed resource units to support teaching about nine selected cultural universals (Alleman & Brophy, 2001, 2002, 2003). Seven of these units drew on the information on food, clothing, shelter, communication, transportation, family living, and government gathered in the large studies summarized in chapter 2 through chapter 8. The other two units focus on money and childhood. We were unable to complete comparably large studies of these two cultural universals, but we did gather information in two smaller studies. The findings are summarized in this chapter.
