ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 described the procedures for explaining ERP and developing the fear hierarchy. This chapter opens with a discussion of guidelines for forming a response prevention plan. Specific techniques for stopping rituals across the various OCD symptom dimensions are presented. Next, the chapter focuses on how to help the patient's family (or cohabitants) end their participation in avoidance and rituals. Inclusion of one or more relatives or close friends in therapy as support persons is suggested, especially if the therapist is concerned that adherence to treatment is anticipated to be a problem. The chapter ends with an illustration of how to summarize the treatment plan and review what is expected of the patient during treatment. It is crucial that the patient, therapist, and anyone else involved in the treatment program align together in a collaborative effort to reduce the patient's OCD symptoms.
