ABSTRACT
Dialectologists have focused principally on regional and social group patterns of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary use. But there are also important differences in the way that groups of people use language in social interaction. To understand communication patterns in a particular speech community—individuals who generally share a language and expectations about appropriate ways of interacting—researchers investigate the norms for appropriate interactive behavior in various situations.
