Telegraph to Telephone (to 1893)

Effective means of communicating rapidly over distance have been sought for centuries. Original distance signaling meant using shouts, drums, fire or smoke, or the use of human or animal couriers. All of these were developed to a high degree by the Roman Empire. ¹ Only after centuries of using similar methods did a more systemic approach finally appear in preindustrial Europe.
