ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we attempt to give a brief description of some ofthe most important Intelligent Tutoring Systems based on natu-ral language dialogue with an emphasis on current research systems. Then we summarize the state of some current major issues in dialogue-based ITS. We begin with the first round of systems developed by Carbonell and Collins and Stevens, by Burton and Brown, and by Woolf and McDonald. Then we describe some of the second round of systems developed in the late 1980s and 1990s: Lesgold’s SHERLOCK II, Wilensky’s UNIX Consultant, Cawsey’s EDGE, VanLehn’s ANDES/ATLAS, and Kevin Ashley’s CATO. Finally, we describe the current research systems: AutoTutor, Why2-Atlas and ITSpoke, BEETLE, CATO, CyclePad, and SCoT.
