ABSTRACT

Michael and Rovick had already developed considerableexperience tutoring students solving CIRCSIM problemswhen this project began. Their experience and the result of the CIRCSIM experiment had convinced them that students who used the program did learn to predict the behavior of the baroreceptor reflex successfully. They were also convinced that a computer tutor with natural language capabilities would be even more useful in helping students correct their conceptual errors. To build such a tutor required that we understand how Michael and Rovick tutor students as they solve problems about the physiology of the baroreceptor reflex.
