ABSTRACT

DNA databases were developed to help solve crimes by creating a network for exchanges of information among law enforcement agencies. More specifically, DNA databases allow forensic laboratories to compare DNA profiles electronically to identify perpetrators. The United Kingdom established the world’s first national DNA database (the National DNA Database® or NDNAD in 1995. It demonstrated initial success in solving crimes. Three years later, the United States introduced its national COMBINED DNA INDEX SYSTEM or CODIS. By the end of 1998, other countries (Austria, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Slovenia) had also introduced national DNA databases. Table 22.1 describes some national DNA databases.
