ABSTRACT

Forensic laboraties provide scientific testing to investigative agencies. To date, nine disciplines are commonly practiced in most municipal, county, and state forensic laboratories in the United States:

• Crime scene investigation • Latent print examination • Forensic biology • Controlled substance analysis • Postmortem toxicology • Questioned document examination • Firearm, toolmark, and other impression evidence examination • Explosive and fire debris examination • Transfer (trace) evidence examination

Table 1.1 describes services normally provided by a forensic laboratory. Examples of these analyses are shown in Figure 1.1 through Figure 1.8.
