ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to help the reader understand how disasters affect households and families. By understanding those impacts, it is possible to build household and family capacity, thereby reducing vulnerability. This chapter thus addresses how households and families, along with emergency managers, social service providers, and disaster organizations, can better prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate disaster impacts.
