ABSTRACT

Geographic profiling is a term that means different things to different people. It can be applied very specifically to a particular set of techniques to help prioritize suspect investigations based on the geographic distribution of serial crimes, or more broadly to any such technique or method. Few other analytical systemologies can claim to be so controversial or divisive, even among practitioners. While many claims of success have been touted for various methods of geographic profiling, few have been documented. In this chapter, we will thoroughly explore the various schools of geographic profiling, their histories and claims, and most importantly their methods.
