ABSTRACT

Introduction A popular answer to the question of how to control violence is to “lock them up.” In the United States, we conne a larger percentage of the population than almost all other countries, yet it has not kept our nation safe. In this chapter, we brie¢y examine punishment to provide a better understanding of its concepts and principles. Frequently, we hear comments that the prison system fails to prevent future crime. –is is a fact that cannot be established. –ere is no way to clearly establish if the present correctional system promotes or reduces violent crime.
