ABSTRACT

Much has been written about the current and expected future dysfunction of emergency medicine that most of you have heard this topic addressed far too frequently. Perhaps the most comprehensive work written on this topic that has had the greatest impact is the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM’s) The Future of Emergency Care in 2006. Other noteworthy sources of the current state of emergency medicine include the American College of Emergency Physicians’ (ACEP’s) National Report Card on the State of Emergency Medicine, Press Ganey’s Pulse Report, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) The National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS).
