ABSTRACT

What if the primary mission of the police were to do something about serious crime? If the police were refocused on a primary mission of crime ›ghting, with an organizational design based on the geography of serious crime, policing would radically change. It is that change in model-a model we call mission-based policing-that is presented in the rest of this book. Mission-based policing is based on ›ve principles: the principle of focus, the principle of police eectiveness, the principle of serious crime deployment, the principle of mission integrity, and the principle of mission’s end. e ›rst two are discussed in this chapter, which continues our emphasis on developing a strategic and sustained police response to serious crime.
