ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the structural adjustment of Bulgarian agriculture during this transition period. Agriculture has been and is an important sector in the economy of Bulgaria because of its favorable natural conditions and good farming traditions. The second section of this chapter reviews the macroeconomic situation and dynamics during the transition period. In the third and fourth sections present the role of agriculture in the national economy and its development. Section five summarizes the main features and impacts of the land reform, privatization, and irrigation-management transfer. In the sixth section, an analysis of farming structure is made on the basis of the recent farm surveys. Section seven explores the impacts of agricultural policies while the eighth section summarizes some lessons learned from Bulgarian experience m agricultural adjustment. The final section presents some overall conclusions.
