ABSTRACT

The analysis then turns to the challenges that still prevail on the long road toward sustainable development, with special emphasis being placed on the evolution that led to the World Summit on Sustainable Development, which took place in Johannesburg from August 26, to September 4, 2002. In the concluding portion of the chapter, the specific threats faced by the new international agenda for sustainable development are scrutinized, particularly the asymmetrical results of the globalization process so far , and the new realities of international terrorism after the September 11 attacks on the United States.
