ABSTRACT
As one might expect, an entire range of terms and phrases has emerged. The significant vocabulary includes authentic assessment, performance assessment, practical testing, and direct testing. Whatever the terminology, the move to alternative assessment practices has reached epic proportions. To place this movement into some kind of meaningful context, it is necessary to develop a contrasting image of more traditional assessment patterns and their effects on students.
