ABSTRACT
In the classical social contract story, the individual political subject, the classical liberal individual, is the bearer of rights and duties. The most significant moral ideal in this tradition is the preservation of the freedom of this individual. In the modern world, in this tradition, not only are individuals assumed to be ‘persons’ in this classical liberal sense; we are also rational utility maximisers – much social scientific theory operates on the assumption that this is what we all are.
