ABSTRACT
To compound the difficulty surrounding the competing views of citizenship, there are, as previously discussed, different ideas and views as to what exactly is the appropriate role of the state. To appreciate this debate, it is necessary to look at how, over the last quarter of a century, there have been changes in the view of what exactly the role of the state should consist of in the life of a UK citizen.
