ABSTRACT

One suggested answer to those questions is to look at the role and function of the media in their reporting of news and events. Older readers of this book will remember when it was free to visit Stonehenge, without restriction. Anybody could visit the monument at any time of the day or night. Some citizens attached significance to the monument at the time of the summer solstice and would make a pilgrimage to the site. However, once the monument became part of the tourist industry, with restricted access, it was impossible for those who continued to make a pilgrimage to get access. Although access was denied, the pilgrims still wanted to celebrate the summer solstice. The result was a sort of annual peaceful carnival.
