ABSTRACT

There are a number of major international organisations which are involved in various aspects of food production and distribution. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) is the body which regulates international trade. Two of the United Nations bodies are also concerned with food issues, namely, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). These two bodies provide the secretariat for the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), which is an intergovernmental body with 165 member countries. It protects consumer health, ensures fair practices in food trade and promotes the co-ordination of food standards. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is also an important player on the international scene as far as food is concerned, and is particularly active in the field of biotechnology and food.
