ABSTRACT
Contiguity or geographical contiguity as it is sometimes called is not a method or mode by which title to territory may be acquired under international law. However, it is a concept that is raised in many disputes about territory and its general significance should not be underestimated. First, in the law of the sea the principle of geographical contiguity will be important in determining disputes about entitlement to a territorial sea or a continental shelf.
