ABSTRACT
There are four general rules of statutory interpretation, considered in turn in the four succeeding chapters. They are the plain meaning rule, the golden rule (that manifest absurdity and injustice are to be avoided), the mischief rule and the purposive approach. These are rules of general applicability and therefore are to be contrasted with rules which apply only if the particular circumstances to which they relate occur in the Act.
