ABSTRACT
This chapter will, as its title indicates, explore the connection between participation and volunteering. Given the strength of voluntarism in the British Isles, this may seem rather an odd enterprise. Surely the relationship is so intimate as to make the two almost synonymous? Nevertheless, it will be argued that the correspondence is less obvious and the conceptual fit less exact than the conventional opinion suggests, and there are many rough edges, many ends left trailing.
