ABSTRACT
When interpretation is based on the ‘intention of Parliament’ it is described as logical. Logical interpretation is of two kinds: extensive and restrictive. Extensive (or liberal) interpretation stretches the meaning of a word or an expression to cover its obvious meaning. It may also be referred to as remedial interpretation when ‘judges … bring in everything they can within the maximum scope of the language used’. It adopts a very comprehensive approach towards the interpretation.
