ABSTRACT

The Directive Relating to the Quality of Petrol and Diesel Fuels 98/70 has superceded Directive 85/210 which originally established limits for the lead content of petrol. The scope of the new Directive is set out in Art 1: ‘[T]he Directive sets technical specifications on health and environmental grounds for fuels to be used for vehicles …’ Member States are required to prohibit the marketing of leaded petrol within their territory (from 1 January 2000, Art 3).
