ABSTRACT

The aim of this Directive is twofold: (a) it aims to ensure that human beings, animals, plants and the environment are protected against possible harmful effects resulting from the uncontrolled spreading of sewage sludge on land, and (b) to promote the correct use of sewage sludge on such land (Art 1). Sewage sludge is defined in Art 2. Basically, it refers to the solid matter which remains after filtering (screening) takes place at a sewage treatment works. Although sewage can be burned or buried, it can also be sprayed on farmers’ fields to improve the quality of the soil.
