ABSTRACT

The national waste strategy for England and Wales, Waste Strategy 2000 for England and Wales, was published by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions on 25 May 2000 (Cmnd 4693). The strategy is a waste management plan for England and Wales required under the EC Waste Framework Directive 75/442, the EC Hazardous Waste Directive 91/689 and the EC Packaging Waste Directive 94/62, implemented by Section 44A of the Environment Protection Act 1990 (as amended). It is also a strategy for dealing with waste diverted from landfill in England and Wales, as required by Art 5 of the Landfill Directive 99/31. The current strategy replaces the previous statements contained in Making Waste Work: A Strategy for Sustainable Waste Management in England and Wales ((1995) Cm 3040) and A Way With Waste: A Draft Waste Strategy for England and Wales (DETR, June 1999). The strategy will be reviewed every five years. A root-andbranch review will take place in 2010. Annual monitoring of the implementation of the strategy will be undertaken by the Waste Strategy Monitoring Group sponsored by the DETR. The Group will produce an annual report.
