ABSTRACT
These three examples illustrate the problems involved in generalising from statistical studies of populations, to draw conclusions about individuals. Returning to the field of mental disorder and violence, it appears that the research that has increased our understanding of the statistical associations between mental disorder and violence has not been of great assistance in the task of risk management in the individual. The main value of research to date has been in raising our awareness of the problem.
