ABSTRACT
The custody officers to be discussed here should not be confused with the custody officers under PACE 1984. The latter are police officers, usually of the rank of sergeant, who are primarily responsible for ensuring the proper treatment of detained suspects, as well as maintaining correct procedures applicable to the custody suites at police stations. Those referred to in this chapter are custody officers created under Pt I of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.
