You can forget high profile divorce cases and courtroom dramas. Actually getting a divorce is very low-key indeed. It is, broadly speaking, a matter of filling in the right forms and waiting for your file to work its way through the system. Our flowchart (pp 64-66) shows how it is done. You can begin the process of obtaining a divorce in any of the county courts listed on our website, but we recommend that you use your local court, which is usually the court nearest to you. The courts are open weekdays (not bank holidays) between 10 am and 4 pm, and they may be able to field telephone enquiries between 9 am and 5 pm.
