ABSTRACT
Lay persons make a valuable contribution to the decisionmaking process in administrative tribunals. They sit with a lawyer chair, so there is a mix of legal and other skills. In employment tribunals, for instance, the lay members will have knowledge of business practices and the work place. Their practical experience thus complements the legal knowledge of the chair.
