ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the admissibility of evidence which is relevant to the credibility of a witness. It also deals with the admissibility of evidence of a criminal defendant’s good character. The following related areas are covered elsewhere:

• the role played by evidence about the ‘credibility’ of real or documentary evidence in laying a foundation for the admission of such evidence is discussed in Chapters 5 and 6;

• the use of sexual history evidence in sexual offence trials when put forward as relevant to the facts in issue is discussed in Chapter 13; and

• the use of evidence of a criminal defendant’s bad character or prior criminal conduct is discussed in Chapter 16.
