ABSTRACT

In this chapter we look at the various non-custodial sentences that are applicable to young offenders.

There are some circumstances in which a juvenile may be tried and sentenced by an adult magistrates’ court. However, the range of sentences available to the adult court is very limited. An adult magistrates’ court may:

• order an absolute or conditional discharge; • impose a fine (see below); • order the parents of the juvenile to enter into a recognisance to take proper care of,

and to exercise proper control over, a juvenile who has not attained the age of 16 (see below);

• make ancillary orders such as compensation and disqualification from driving.
