ABSTRACT

Mediations are all different and mediators conduct them with their own ideas of the best process. There is no set number of ‘stages’ of mediation. However, most mediators approach a mediation with an anticipated structure and maintain the flexibility to deviate from it. The model that I use involves seven stages:

(1) setting the table; (2) storytelling; (3) determining interests; (4) setting out the issues; (5) brainstorming options; (6) selecting the durable options; and (7) closing the mediation.
