ABSTRACT

Greece had advocated for more than 40 years, between 1930–1974, 6 nautical miles limit for territorial sea in the Aegean. However, since 1974 there has been a marked change in Greek position in favour of 12 nautical miles. This shift coincided with and evidently has a certain relation to the Aegean tensions over petroleum rights and the Cyprus crises that occur in the same period, in 1973–1974.
