ABSTRACT

Although armed robbery is widely considered to be one of the most serious of crimes (carrying a long prison sentence and subject to a considerable amount of media attention), there is very little academic research on the subject. There have, of course, been a number of popular books written on notorious robberies such as the Brinks-Matt and the Great Train robberies as well as commentaries on the ‘underworld’, but very little attention has been paid, particularly in Britain, to a crime that has been defined as ‘the taking of goods or money by actual or threatened force.’ 1 The aim of this book is to fill this gap in knowledge and to contribute to a more detailed understanding of this issue.
