ABSTRACT

A critical element in the process of solving crimes is the nature of the victim–offender relation. The proximity and intensity of this relation will directly affect the likelihood of an offender being identified and caught. Consequently, the relatively quick and anonymous nature of armed robbery makes it amongst the most difficult crimes to solve. It is for this reason there has been considerable international discussion on the most effective ways to deal with armed robbery and, in particular, on the desirability of establishing dedicated robbery squads that are able to concentrate exclusively on this type of crime.
