ABSTRACT

This chapter presents in depth the implementation of the BLSCC programme in the two communities: a model versus a non-model. More specifically, the first section reports the qualitative data collected on community A: order and peace; the second section reports the qualitative data collected on community B: disorder and fear. Then the third section presents the data from the community survey in detail by contrasting the two communities in terms of three aspects of community life: (1) mutual help, social networks and interaction; (2) crime, fear of crime and attitudes to the security guards and the police; (3) awareness and perceived effectiveness of BLSCC. The chapter concludes by discussing both the qualitative and quantitative results in terms of the manifestation of the two aspects of social capital — bonding and bridging social capital — in the two communities.
