ABSTRACT

This chapter and the next draw on what my research participants said about the dialogue that takes place in sentencing and while the offender is serving the sentence ordered by the court. In this chapter, I look at the messages that courts were seen as seeking to convey to offenders whom they were sentencing, and how sentencers were seen to use particular sanctions to reinforce such messages. Chapter 6 will then explore the responses expected from offenders, whether they were seen as responding in these ways, and what might have impeded their readiness and ability to do so.
