ABSTRACT

Specialisation is a puzzle in criminal careers. From fictional representations of criminals that we see in films or on television or read about in books, we perhaps come to expect criminals to specialise. Further, when we hear about serial killers, bank robbers or drug barons in both fact and fiction, we do not get to know much about whether they are or have been involved with other criminal activities. However, the research evidence on the topic is much more ambivalent.
