ABSTRACT

In Chapter 5, we proposed the metaphor of a heart transplant as a conceptual tool for analysing the feasibility of an alternative energy sector expected to deliver a net supply of energy carriers to society at a required pace. Then we illustrated that this feasibility depends on three key characteristics:

the output/input of energy carriers associated with the exploitation of a primary energy source to generate a net supply of energy carriers;

the power level that can be achieved in the energy sector in order to process an adequate amount of energy input per unit of time (the level of EMRES); and

the compatibility of the resulting overall demand of primary energy sources with existing boundary conditions.
