ABSTRACT

The preceding chapters have discussed in some detail the dramatic reductions in energy use that are possible through improved building envelopes; more efficient heating and cooling devices; through maximizing the use of passive solar heating, cooling and ventilation; through daylighting and advanced electric lighting systems; through clever ways of combining the components of residential and commercial HVAC systems; through better use and supply of hot water; and through more efficient household appliances, consumer goods and office equipment. In this chapter, the net effect of these improvements on total building energy use, when incorporated together in a systems approach to building design, is illustrated through a discussion of recent, exemplary buildings.
