Vulnerability of the Savanna Zone book
The media and science often portray arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions of the world as being regions of endemic poverty and economic and social disruptions. They are supposedly affected by serious land degradation such as the expansion of deserts from advancing sand dunes. People are said to be victims of the interconnected threats of drought and famine (Agnew and Andersson, 1992). In this book we prefer to identify challenges and opportunities instead of problems. It is important in this perspective to recall the critical evolutionary role played by open savanna ecosystems, which indicates an inherent potential for human development in balance with nature.
