ABSTRACT
The world faces the combined challenge of feeding an additional 3 billion people in 2050 and of addressing what has been called ‘Conway’s hidden food gap’(1997): the malnutrition among the world’s poorest people. This will require an additional 5600 km3/year of consumptive green water use (Chapter 3). This is a tough agricultural goal, particularly as it has to rely to a large degree on increased agricultural productivity, instead of on expanding agricultural land. It is also a major ecohydrological challenge, as every increase in consumptive water use for food may affect ecological functions dependent on water.
